Where medicine meets mindfulness, and stories of the heart find a deeper voice.
The recent book launch of Guan Xin Ji (观心集) at Northern Heart Hospital Penang brought together an inspiring mix of healthcare, art, and community, creating a meaningful moment that extended well beyond a typical book release.

Authored by Dr. Tan Chiang Soo, the book reflects years of lived experience as a cardiologist, combined with personal reflections shaped by Buddhist philosophy and life’s uncertainties. While the original introduction took place earlier in Ipoh (怡保观音堂), the Penang session offered a wider platform for the public to connect with the ideas behind the book, and with the person behind the pages.
More Than a Book. A Personal Journey
In his address, Dr. Tan spoke openly about the journey of bringing Guan Xin Ji to life. What started as personal writings gradually evolved into a published work, a process that required time, persistence, and the quiet support of his wife and family. From drafting and refining the content to editing and layout, the book was very much a collective effort behind the scenes.

Balancing clinical responsibilities with writing was no small feat. Yet, as Dr. Tan shared, the process itself became a form of reflection, allowing him to revisit moments from his medical career and transform them into meaningful narratives that others could relate to.
A Meaningful Launch Moment
The official launch ceremony featured Dr. Tan alongside internationally recognised artist Mr. Tang Yeok Khang, who collaborated on the book’s visual elements. As both took up the ribbon together, the gesture symbolised more than a formal opening, it marked the release of a body of work that bridges science and art, and invites readers into a deeper exploration of the heart, both physically and emotionally.

Mr. Tang’s artwork, inspired by the themes within the book, added a visual dimension to the experience, translating complex ideas into simple yet powerful imagery.
Giving Back Through Every Copy
Beyond its literary and artistic value, Guan Xin Ji carries a strong charitable purpose. Priced at RM60 for a complete two-volume set, a significant portion of proceeds from the book and accompanying artworks will be channelled to charitable organisations, including local welfare and dialysis centres.

This initiative reflects Dr. Tan’s ongoing mission, not only to restore the rhythm of life, but also to contribute meaningfully to the wider community. It is, in many ways, a continuation of his work as a doctor, expressed through a different medium.
A Queue That Spoke Volumes
One of the most memorable moments of the event came during the book signing session. While Dr. Tan was briefly engaged in a press conference at the International Lounge, a long queue had already formed, with attendees patiently waiting for his return.

The anticipation in that moment captured something genuine: a connection between author and readers that goes beyond the written word. Many were eager not just for an autograph, but for a brief interaction, a chance to share, reflect, or simply express appreciation.
A Space for Reflection
Accompanying the launch was a small art exhibition and live sketch activities, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for visitors. The integration of art into the event echoed the essence of Guan Xin Ji, encouraging people to slow down, observe, and reflect.

At its core, the book is not just about medicine or philosophy. It is about perspective, about learning to see life, illness, and healing through a more thoughtful lens. Through simple yet sincere storytelling, it gently invites readers to reflect on their own experiences and inner world.
