Dr. Tan Chiang Soo began his education in Penang before pursuing his medical degree at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, where he graduated with Honours. He obtained membership with the Royal College of Physicians in the UK and completed his cardiology training at the National Heart Centre of Singapore, specialising in interventional cardiology. Throughout his career, Dr. Tan has worked at renowned hospitals, including Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals in Sydney and Hospital Pulau Pinang. He also served as the acting head of the Department of Medicine at Hospital Alor Setar before joining the National Heart Centre of Singapore, where he further advanced his expertise in interventional cardiology.
Dr. Tan has a wealth of experience in performing a wide variety of cardiac procedures, such as 2D and dobutamine stress echocardiograms, pacemaker insertions, coronary angiography, and balloon angioplasty with stenting. He regularly performs primary angioplasty for acute heart attacks, a life-saving procedure. He is certified as an independent operator in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), a minimally invasive way to replace the aortic valve for severe aortic stenosis without open heart surgery. Dr. Tan is one of the few cardiologists in Malaysia experienced in specialised procedures like coronary brachytherapy, rotational and direct coronary atherectomy, and coronary doppler wire studies. Additionally, he has been heavily involved in research on intracoronary stem cell implantation.
An experienced educator, Dr. Tan has lectured medical students from the National University of Singapore and cardiac technicians from Singapore Polytechnic. He has published numerous papers and presented at international cardiology conferences. Outside of medicine, Dr. Tan enjoys swimming, racket sports, fine dining, and music, and is fluent in English, Mandarin, Malay, Hokkien, and Cantonese. He is married with two musically talented daughters.
